The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) extended the yellow alert due to heat to 13 districtsAt least until the end of Saturday.
According to the IPMA, they are under yellow alert (the least serious) until 6:00 p.m. on Saturdaydue to the persistence of high values of the maximum temperature, the districts of Bragança, Vila Real, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, Leiria, Santarém, Portalegre, Lisbon, Setúbal, Évora, Beja and Faro.
On Wednesday, after leaving a meeting with the Minister of Internal Administration to evaluate the weather forecasts for the coming days, the president of the IPMA said that the country would face the third heat wave of this year starting on Saturday the 20th.
After this alert, the General Directorate of Health (DGS) recommended the adoption of additional protection measures against heat, such as increasing the intake of water or fruit juices and advised the population to avoid the consumption of alcoholic beverages, as well as direct exposure in the sun, mainly between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
In a note published in placethe DGS reminds that the IPMA foresees a gradually rising temperatures in the next few days and advises the search for fresh and ventilated environments, or air-conditioned.
Other recommended additional protection measures are loose, opaque clothing that covers most of the body, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses with UV protection.
In the information released this Wednesday, the DGS warns that avoid “activities that require great physical effort”namely, sports and leisure abroad.”
It also recommends choosing the hours of least heat to travel by car and asks for “special attention” to the groups most vulnerable to heat, such as children, the elderly, the chronically ill, pregnant women, people with reduced mobility, workers active abroad, interns of physical activity and isolated people.
According to the health authority, chronic patients or those subject to medication and/or specific diets “must follow the recommendations of the attending physician or the SNS 24 contact center: 808 24 24 24“.
