Acreditar launches campaign on the impact of pediatric cancer on families

The Acreditar association launches this Thursday the campaign “golden september” with the slogan “My cancer is not only mine: it’s also my family“, which aims to raise awareness of the impact of pediatric cancer on families.

In a statement, Acreditar said that during the month of September, as part of the “Golden September” campaign that takes place around the world, will promote various awareness-raising actions diseases and their impact on families.

“September is International Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, a very special time for organizations around the world that support children and young people with cancer and their families. The golden ribbon is a symbol of the strength, courage and resilience of these children and young people”, says Acreditar.

With this initiative, Acreditar — Association of Parents and Friends of Children with Cancer aims to promote knowledge about the disease and the reality faced by children, young people and their families.

Within the framework of the campaign, the activities called “golden moments” including walks, runs, bike rides, picnics, an online quiz, and fundraising and donations.

In the note, Acreditar recalls that despite being a rare disease, cancer remains the most frequent cause of death due to disease in children.

“In survival, the consequences derived from the disease and the treatments are responsible for a lower quality of life in two thirds of the survivors. in families, the diagnosis brings profound changes in its dynamics“, refers to Accredit.

The association emphasizes that families undergo radical changes in their organization: parents who stop working to accompany their sick children and sick leave that lead to loss of income.

It also highlights that the Casa Acreditar Lisboa (which welcomes, free of charge, families who live far away while their children undergo treatment at the Portuguese Institute of Oncology) was the subject of works and now has 32 rooms available (I was 12 years old before).

Most of the people who visit Casa de Lisboa come from Madeira, Azores, Algarve and Alentejo.

It also welcomes children who come from Portuguese-speaking African Countries (PALOP), by virtue of cooperation agreements with the State, and there is also a family that fled from Ukraine.

1,695 families have passed through Casa Acreditar in Lisbon since it began operating in 2002.
