The tropical storm could intensify but should not cross the Azores, says IPMA

The tropical storm “Danielle”, which formed west of the Azores, can still “intensify in the coming days”, becoming a “hurricane”, but it should not cross the archipelago, although it can influence the weather, it was revealed this Thursday .

In a statement sent to the newsrooms, the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA) reports that at 3:00 p.m. local time (4:00 p.m. in Lisbon) tropical storm “Danielle” was “1,545 kilometers west of the Azores”, predicting that, “in the next few hours, it will continue to move slowly towards the east”.

“It is expected that, in the coming days, it could still intensify, becoming a hurricane,” reads the statement, signed by meteorologist Rita Mota, from the IPMA delegation in the Azores.

Taking into account “the geographical and temporal distance to which the cyclone is located”, the IPMA states that “there is uncertainty regarding its trajectory and respective intensity”.

However, with the data available so far, “the depression should not cross the Azores archipelago”, underlines the meteorologist.

Even so, the IPMA admits that the depression can influence the weather “during the next week”, especially in the western group (Flores and Corvo), “with probability [de influenciar o estado do tempo nessas ilhas] from 10 to 20%”.
