Brody, the dog who helped his owner find out she had breast cancer

Brody even managed to get the line about dog friendship right: he was best friends with Lucy Giles, leading her to discover that he had a serious health problem.

The story takes place in Didcot, a city in the United Kingdom and is helping to raise funds for an association to fight cancer. The Newfoundland dog began to sniff the 45-year-old woman’s right armpit and what Lucy thought was just a wake-up call turned out to lead to an unwanted diagnosis.

It happened in September when he [o Brody] I started sniffing my right armpit. It happened more when I was sitting down resting or watching TV. At first I thought he wanted some attention and play, but I decided to listen to him since he only sniffed me from the right side and always in the same place. One morning when I was in the shower, I decided to feel the area under my breasts. It was then that I felt something strange right there in my armpit, ”Lucy tells the American magazine Newsweek.

It was then that he decided to go to the doctor and received the diagnosis: “They quickly told me that had breast cancer and that there were some residual cancer cells in the lymph nodes.”

Lucy Giles was immediately treated with chemotherapy, before undergoing a mastectomy followed by radiotherapy. She is currently still undergoing chemotherapy while continuing to work full time. She is deeply grateful to Brody who, as she told the British newspaper The Independent, “saved her life.”

In fact, Lucy confesses to Newsweek, Brody came into her life “for a reason.” The dog came to the family in July 2021 after Lucy’s partner Ashley was admitted to hospital and put on a life support machine for six months with Covid-19. Ashley became totally dependent on Lucy and it was at that moment that they decided to increase the family -which already had two dogs, two cats, a turtle and 18 rabbits- and adopt Brody.

Now, Lucy, a friend and Brody are looking to raise money for Cancer Research UK, a non-profit cancer association through their story and “charity walks”. In a September 3 post on Facebook, the cancer patient reported the amount acquired for the organization.
