The nine islands of the Azores will be under a yellow warning this Friday, due to the forecast of rains, sometimes intense, and electrical storms, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) announced on Thursday.
According to the IPMA, the bad weather should begin to affect the islands of the central group (Terceira, São Jorge, Pico, Graciosa and Faial) and the west (Flores and Corvo).
EITHER IPMA issued yellow warning to core group between 00:00 local time (01:00 in Lisbon) and 12:00 on Friday, taking into account the forecast of precipitation, sometimes intense, that may be accompanied by thunderstorms.
For the western group, the yellow warning will be active between 00:00 and 09:00 on Friday.
In the eastern group (São Miguel and Santa Maria), the yellow notice is in force between 12:00 and 9:00 p.m. on Friday.
The yellow warning corresponds to a “risk situation for certain activities depending on the weather situation”.
The passage of a cold frontal surface will cause this worsening of the weather in all the islands.
Following the weather warning, the Regional Civil Protection and Fire Service of the Azores recommends taking self-protection measures in these weather situations.
Civil Protection recommends, among other measures, that the population consolidate roofs, doors and windows and keep the drainage systems clean, as well as those adjoining the residences and that loose objects from the garden are kept.
“Don’t move unnecessarily. It can interrupt the movement of the security forces and endanger their safety, that is, fall into holes hidden by sheets of water, ”he also warns.
If “you are aware of a situation that may cause damage, notify the competent authorities”, also recommends the Regional Civil Protection Service.
