An earthquake measuring 2.7 on the Richter scale was felt this Wednesday on the island of Faial, revealed the Azores Seismovolcanic Surveillance and Information Center (CIVISA).
In a statement, CIVISA indicates that the event, registered at 10:30 a.m.was felt by the population with maximal intensity IV (modified Mercalli scale) in the Ribeirinha and Pedro Miguel Parishes (City Hall of Horta).
the shake it was also felt with intensity III in the parishes of Salão, Praia do Almoxarife, Flamengos and in the city of Horta (City Hall of Horta).
The Modified Mercalli scale measures the “degrees of intensity and respective description” and, when there is an intensity of IV, considered “moderate”, the “shaking of parked cars”, the “shaking of windows, doors and plates” and “the windows and crockery hits or rattles”, and the walls or wooden structures can creak, describes the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) on its website.
In intensity III, considered “weak”, the shock is “felt inside” and “hanging objects sway”, feeling a “vibration similar to that caused by the passage of heavy vehicles”, adds the IPMA.
