Temperatures above 30 degrees, dust and increased fire danger in the coming days

Maximum temperatures could reach 34 degrees Celsius in some regions of the continent in the coming days, with an increased danger of rural fires and dust coming from North Africa, according to the IPMA.

“Temperatures are quite high for normal in the month of October. The maximum is eight to nine degrees above normal for the month of October. This situation of high temperature values is expected, at least, until the 8th [sábado] and 9 [domingo] a drop to values within the normal range is expected for this month”, meteorologist Patrícia Marques told Lusa.

According to the meteorologist of the Instituto Português do Mar da Atmosfera (IPMA), maximum temperatures between 30 and 32 degrees are expected in Alentejo and Santarém and 34 in some towns in the interior of Alentejo.

“The high maximum temperatures increase the risk of fire since we are in a situation of low rainfall that will continue at least until Sunday, although there is a possibility, at this very low time, of rainfall in the northern and central interior. 7 or 8, but it’s still not very reliable,” he added.

According to Patricia Marques, the dust that has been felt should start to disappear from this afternoon.

“There is an altitude depression to the south of mainland Portugal. and that is bringing dust and high temperatures to the Iberian Peninsula. The concentration in the atmosphere is affecting more areas of the central region and the southern region. These are concentration values higher than expected, but they start to decrease from the afternoon of this day,” he said.

Patrícia Marques also said that as of Sunday, the forecast points to a drop in temperature and the return of the rains.
