The Pentagon is trying to catch up with Russia with hypersonic weapons

Washington is spending heavily to design and build a hypersonic weapon similar to Russia’s “Kinzhal” and “Tyrkon” hypersonic missiles, and aims to put the first such missile into service by 2027.

The US hypersonic missile is expected to enter service in 2027, and the Pentagon is investigating several projects related to hypersonic weapons. It can accelerate to 6,000 kilometers per hour in the upper layers of the Earth’s atmosphere.

The F-35 and F-22 will be carried by fifth-generation fighters.

At the same time, an ARRW air-to-air missile is being developed, which is expected to have a speed of more than Mach 20 (approximately 24,000 km/h) and will be launched and transported to a distance of 900 km. of B-1B strategic bombers.

However, the United States faces problems in the production of hypersonic weapons. Last year, the US Air Force conducted 3 tests of a prototype accelerator unit of a promising missile. All are failures.

In the first test in April 2021, the missile did not leave the aircraft, in July the missile engine did not start, and in December the ARRW launch failed again.
