The cold is already here and with it, sooner or later, sneezing, coughing, the occasional cold and sometimes even the flu. A faithful friend for these moments has a name: vitamin C. And this season we can get it from tangerines! Two tangerines provide almost the entire recommended dose of vitamin C for a day, but they give us more than that. Although they are present throughout the year, from October they are in full force and it is always good to have them around.

Tangerine, clementine or tangerine?

There are those who say that mandarins and clementines are different from tangerines or bises and the confusion between all these names is legitimate. Botanically, the tangerine belongs to the vast and heterogeneous group of citrus fruits. Within this group it is very easy to obtain hybrids and crosses that sometimes result in new species. The truth is that all the fruits mentioned above belong to the group of tangerines.

Originally, the most cultivated mandarin in Portugal was the one from Setúbal, but with the modernization of the agricultural sector, new varieties were introduced, such as the fina and the nulles (sometimes called clementine), the satsumas (a Japanese species without seeds and with great cold resistance) or bis (a hybrid).

On the other hand, the word “mandarin” appears as a foreign word due to the proximity of Portugal to Spain in the production of mandarins: many of the species introduced into the country arrived via Spain and, in that country, this fruit is called mandarin. . Either tangerine or tangerine, therefore, we are talking about the same thing.

What defines a tangerine?

Generally speaking, a tangerine is smaller than an orange, flat, and very easy to peel, which explains its popularity as a convenient snack to eat anywhere, anytime of the day. Despite being a cousin of the orange, their flavors are clearly different and combine very well, as Compal Família Laranja Tangerina demonstrates: mandarin gives the classic orange flavor a lightness and an unmistakable aromatic tone.

In addition to the flavor and richness of nuances offered by so many varieties, the mandarin is an ally of health, especially in winter. It contains, as is characteristic of the fruit, a remarkable fiber content —1.7g in 100g— and, as expected given its juiciness, a high water content (around 88%), which makes this fruit a an ally in hydration. Among the vitamins and minerals found in tangerines, it is worth noting the vitamin C content, which in addition to its contribution to the functioning of the immune system, plays an important role in reducing tiredness and fatigue and is also recognized for its power antioxidant. action.
