The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) today issued orange and yellow warnings for the Azores archipelago, due to heavy rain, wind and marine agitation starting Friday.
According to the IPMA, the islands of the western group (Flores and Corvo) will be under a yellow warning due to maritime disturbances starting at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, a meteorological warning that will change to orange from 12:00 p.m. on Saturday and until 06:00 on Sunday.
The IPMA also issued a yellow alert for those two islands, due to rainfall, sometimes intense, which could be accompanied by a thunderstorm, between 3:00 p.m. on Friday and 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.
Flores and Corvo will continue under a yellow warning, due to the wind between 3:00 p.m. on Friday and 6:00 a.m. on Sunday.
For the East group (São Miguel and Santa Maria), a yellow alert was issued, referring to rain, sometimes intense, that could be accompanied by an electrical storm, between 00:00 and 09:00 on Saturday.
The islands of São Miguel and Santa María will also be under a yellow alert, due to maritime unrest between 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and 9:00 a.m. on Sunday.
The IPMA also issued yellow notices for the islands of the Central group (Terceira, São Jorge, Pico, Graciosa and Faial) between 9:00 p.m. on Friday and 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, due to the forecast of heavy rainfall, which they can be accompanied by storms and wind.
Between 12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, the islands of the Central group will have a yellow warning, due to maritime disturbances, to later raise the warning to orange until 6:00 a.m. on Sunday.
The orange warning indicates a moderate to high risk weather situation and the yellow warning is issued by the IPMA when there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the weather situation.
