First day of 2023 with rain in mainland Portugal

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) forecasts occasional heavy rains in Minho and Douro Litoral starting Saturday afternoon, extending the rainfall to the rest of the continent on Sunday, the first day of 2023.

In the information disclosed in his place Regarding the New Year’s Eve period, the IPMA indicates that the weather on the continent and on the islands will be affected by “a cold surface front of moderate to strong activity, associated with a depression centered in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula.”

“Seasons of rain that can sometimes be intense are expected in Minho and Duero Litoral from the end of December 31, coinciding with the passing of the year, and the rainfall will spread to the rest of the territory starting on the morning of December 1 ”, is mentioned in a statement on the continent.

The rains should affect the southern region “only in the afternoon of the 1st, gradually changing to a shower regime”, and they will decrease in intensity and frequency.

Despite the rain, weather alerts are not currently scheduled for the weekend; active alerts are yellow (the lowest level) and end on Friday morning, covering the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Vila real, Porto, Aveiro, Viseu and Coimbra.

“Temperatures will remain mildwith the maximum temperature varying between 14 and 19 degrees Celsius and the minimum between 07 and 14 degrees Celsius”, describes the IPMA.

There is also the possibility that the marine agitation “temporarily increases” on Sunday, up to 4.5 meters high, north of Cape Mondego.

For Madeira, the IPMA also forecasts rainfall between Friday and Sunday, light to moderate wind (sometimes strong in the highlands) and mild temperatures, with highs of 20 to 22 degrees Celsius and lows of 17 to 18 degrees.

In the Azores, however, there is a drop in temperatures, with the minimum around 08/09 degrees and the maximum reaching 14/15 degrees.
