Faro accommodates homeless people during the cold wave that begins this Thursday

The Câmara de Faro will make available, starting this Thursday, a space in the city’s Municipal Pools to respond to people living on the streets during the cold wave that hits mainland Portugal, the municipality announced.

“In addition to a sheltered and warm place to sleep, the municipality will provide these vulnerable people with hygiene, safety, and food conditions,” the municipality reports in a press release.

The City Council of the Algarve capital ensures that “the space is already duly signposted and equipped, with user access to changing rooms, bathrooms and initial capacity for 10 beds, this number can be increased if this proves necessary.”

The referral of the users to lodge will be carried out by the Social Action services and the municipal Civil Protection service, as well as the collaborating institutions of the municipality in the Center for Planning and Intervention of the Homeless (NPISA) of Faro: Grupo de Ajuda a Addictions (GA. TO) and the Movement to Support Social Problems (MAPS).

According to the municipality, MAPS, which already provides a support service to the most disadvantaged people, will also support the referred users with food.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) extended this Thursday the cold yellow warning for the 18 districts of continental Portugal until Sunday, due to the forecast of continued cold.

All the districts of the continent will be under a yellow warning, due to the persistence of low values of the minimum temperature until 6 in the morning on Sunday.

Since Sunday, the IPMA has been issuing yellow cold warnings to districts on mainland Portugal.

The yellow notice, the third least serious, is issued by the IPMA whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the weather situation.

The IPMA forecasts for this Thursday the continuation of the cold weather, with periods of very cloudy skies, rainfall from mid-morning, generally weak, advancing south, which will be snow in the mountains and sometimes strong wind on the west coast to the south of Cape Mondego and in the highlands.

The forecast also points to the possibility of fog or morning mist in some places and frost formation, especially inland.

The minimum temperatures will oscillate between -4 degrees Celsius (in Bragança, Viseu and Guarda) and 5 (in Faro and Lisbon) and the maximum between 4 degrees (in Guarda) and 15 (in Faro).
