Young activist Greta Thunberg was arrested again on Wednesday while taking part in a protest in Oslo, Norway, calling for the removal of wind turbines from a reindeer herding site.
According to Reuters, the protest was led by a group of young people who gathered in front of the Norwegian Ministry of Finance, already after several identical actions in recent days, but this time several elements ended up in custody, including the environmental activist.
At issue is the Norwegian Supreme Court decision which, in 2021, ruled that two properties with wind turbines are violating the rights of the Sami families, an indigenous people of the Arctic who herd reindeer. Despite the decision, nothing has changed with the fact that the court considers this to be a violation of international conventions and the turbines continue to operate on the site.
In statements to TV2, quoted by AFP, Greta Thunberg said that the fight for the indigenous minority that numbers some 100,000 people in northern Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia “is important” because it is a “violation of human rights”. .
As early as January, photos surfaced of the arrest of Greta Thunberg in Lutzerath, Germany, in a town that had been ordered destroyed to make way for the expansion of a coal mine. The young woman herself was photographed smiling as she was escorted and detained by the police and there were even reports that it was a simulated arrest. Police and people who were in the place ended up denying the theory.
