Climate: scientists at the door of the Ministry of the Environment against government inaction

Around a dozen scientists from the Portuguese Scientists Rebellion movement have been at one of the entrances to the Ministry of the Environment, in Lisbon, since 8:40 a.m., against the government’s inaction on climate change.

Teresa Santos, a biologist who is in the place, told Lusa by telephone that the Scientists next to one of the doors of the Ministry of the Environment to “try to prevent the entry” of people and paste various scientific articles on the walls to “demonstrate the need to take action “not for tomorrow, but for yesterday.”

The biologist explained that this action, which takes place within the “Stop Gas” campaign and another that takes place this Wednesday in various countries around the world against the inaction of governments, “is peaceful” and aims to draw attention to climate chaos.

The group of scientists who are here today [quarta-feira] Together with the Ministry of the Environment, it claims the fact that this ministry, like the rest of the States, including the Portuguese State, continue to be hostages of the fossil industries and are incapable of taking timely measures that really face the climate crisis”, he said. .

According to the biologist and member of the Rebellion of Scientists movement, the Portuguese State continues to invest in fossil structures contrary to what science indicates.

“The Portuguese State continues to do green wash (…). We depend on fossil gas from these industries instead of making a strong investment in renewable energy, safeguarding the biological part and not doing what people like João Galamba did recently [atual ministro das Infraestruturas] who at that time was in charge of the Portuguese Environment Agency that deforested a cork oak forest to install solar panels, an environmental crime”, he stressed.

Teresa Santos highlighted the urgency to find solutions to ally a transition to renewable energies such as solar without harming the environment.

“We have to get to 100% energy from renewable sources as quickly as possible and find solutions,” he said.

The biologist also said that this action is part of the “Stop the Gas” campaign and also of an international campaign of scientists.

“It will take place during the day [quarta-feira] several actions around the world linked to fossil fuels and the inaction of governments and the need to have an economy based on renewables”, he concluded.
