The Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, stated this Friday in Sydney that the country wants to become a superpower in the field of renewable energy.
“My government’s vision is that Australia be a superpower in renewable energy“said Albanese, at the Future Energy forum, which brings together sector leaders in Sydney.
According to Albanese, the global trend toward clean energy is the “biggest opportunity for growth and prosperity” from Australia, since the oceanic country is rich in “building elements of the future of clean energy”, such as lithium, cobalt, copper, rare earths or critical minerals.
“And just as our continent is blessed with an abundance of wind and sun, we have Minerals to build wind turbines and solar panels. that convert them into electricity,” he said.
The Prime Minister, in power since May last year, recalled the “pressure” that Australians felt with the increase in energy prices, which he attributed to the war in Ukraine, but also to the “negligence” of the administration previous, which “failed to present a a single and coherent energy policy“.
Albanese recalled that Australia’s goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 205 million tonnes by 2030, and that renewable energy represented 35% of the country’s energy production in the 12 months ending in March, almost 20 percentage points more than in the previous period.
The leader placed special emphasis on solar energy which, in 2023, “will attract, for the first time, more capital than world oil production.” “And no one is as rich in sunlight as we are”he stated.
Australia, one of the world’s biggest polluters if fossil fuel exports are taken into account, passed legislation a year ago that sets the goal of reducing emissions by 43% by 2030 and reaffirmed its commitment to achieving emissions neutrality by 2050.
