Nothing Personal — The Back Office of War is “a work full of topicality and sarcasm, showing the behind the scenes of wars”, with images captured between 2016 and 2023 in exhibitions around the world.
The Russian photographer Nikita Teryoshin opens this week in Lisbon an exhibition that shows “the behind the scenes of wars, before the weapons reach the battlefields”, work that earned him a World Press Photo award.
According to the Narrativa space, in a statement, “Nothing personal: the back office of war“, which will open on Friday, presents, for the first time in Portugal, “a work full of topicality and sarcasm, which shows the behind the scenes of wars.”
The images included in this work by Nikita Teryoshin were captured between 2016 and 2023 at exhibitions and arms fairs in Europe, Africa, Asia, and North and South America.
With this work, the photographer wanted to “show the underworld of this industry, in which heads of state, generals and businessmen attend demonstrations of the lethality of weapons with glasses in hand, as if it were an art exhibition.”
“Teryoshin deliberately hides the faces of the men and women present, as it is not his intention to blame individuals. Anonymous arms dealers can be seen as one Metaphor for a company that operates in the shadows, escaping media attention.“says the Narrative.
With work”Nothing personal: the back office of war” now presented in Portugal, the Russian photographer won, in 2020, the first World Press Photo award in the Contemporary Affairs category.
This year, the book of the same name, published by Ghost Books, earned Nikita Teryoshin the award for best photography book in the creative category of the PhotoEspaña festival.
The opening of “Nothing Personal – The Back Office of War” is scheduled for Friday at 7:00 p.m. and will be attended by the photographer.
Furthermore, on Sunday Nikita Teryoshin will lead a conversation in Narrativaduring which participants will be able to learn more about the photographer’s work process.
Registration for the discussion must be done through the official Narrativa website, at www.anarrativa.com.
The exhibition, with free admission, will be open until December 21..
The Narrativa space, inaugurated in 2022, is a studio, gallery, library and non-profit association whose mission is to share and value Photography as a form of expression and communication.
