Three climate activists detained by the PSP after acting on parliamentary measures

Three student climate activists were arrested this Sunday by the PSP after climbing the stairs of the Assembly of the Republic, painting the stairs and opening a banner to demand the end of fossil fuels by 2030.

This afternoon, several dozen students were preparing to camp in protest against the end of fossil fuels in front of the Assembly of the Republic when three students went up the stairs to paint the stairs and open a banner calling for the end of fossil fuels by 2030 “The three students were dragged away by the police and detained,” says the Student Climate Strike movement, in a statement.

Leonor Chicó, from the movement, told Lusa that the initial objective was for the students to camp in front of the parliament, but, after the arrests of the activists, around 7 p.m., a vigil was called at the Calvário PSP station, where the students were taken away, and there were around 20 young people in front of the Calvário PSP police station and they will remain there until the three students are released.

Contacted by Lusa, the daytime head of the Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the PSP limited himself to confirming the three arrests.

According to the Student Climate Strike movement, students held an assembly in parliament on Sunday afternoon to organize actions that will take place next week.

These actions call for “an end to fossil fuels by 2030 and 100% renewable and affordable electricity by 2025, making this the last winter in which fossil gas is used to produce electricity in Portugal.”

In the last week, student climate activists carried out several actions at several universities in Lisbon and, according to the movement, 16 young people were arrested, some more than once.
