President of the parliament of the Azores in solidarity with the population of Rio Grande do Sul

The president of the Azores parliament expressed solidarity this Monday with the population of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil, after the floods that occurred in that region, which is home to one of the largest Azorean communities in the world.

According to a note from the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores (ALRAA), Luís García sent a message to the governor of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, and the mayor of Porto Alegre, Sebastião Melo, leaving words of support to the population and institutions that are on the front line of rescue and support for flood victims.

In the letter, also sent to the vice consul of Portugal in Porto Alegre, to the honorary consul of Portugal in Pelotas and to the president of the Casa dos Açores of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, to the president of the Legislative Assembly regretted the increase in this type of natural phenomena, which also affect the Azores archipelagodefending the need for “rigorous and urgent reflection on the issue of climate change.”

Luís García, on his behalf and on behalf of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, expressed his deepest condolences and “solidarity with the grieving and displaced population and families,” the note reads.

At least 83 people died in floods in southern Brazil, according to a new report published by the Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul.

According to Civil Defense, there are 276 injured and 111 people missing. The same organization indicated that around 121,957 people are homeless and there are another 19,368 people housed in shelters.

The floods affected 850,422 people who live in 345 of the state’s 496 municipalities and who, according to local authorities, have experienced some type of problem caused by the rains since the beginning of last week.

Rio Grande do Sul, with a population of 11 million people, has been repeatedly affected in the last year by the El Niño climate phenomenon, which causes heavy rains in southern Brazil.
