The head of state, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, sent a message to the president of Kenya, William Ruto, expressing his condolences and solidarity for the consequences of the rains and floods in this country.

This information appears in a note published today on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic on the Internet.

“The President of the Republic sent his Kenyan counterpart, William Ruto, a message of condolences and solidarity for the tragic consequences caused by the torrential rains and devastating floods that continue to ravage Kenya,” the note reads.

Several weeks of heavy rain in the East African region affected more than 600,000 people, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

In Kenya, 238 people died and more than 200,000 were left homelessaccording to the latest official figures published by the Kenyan media.

The rains caused flooding, landslides and damage to roads, bridges and dams. This situation has increased the risk of spreading waterborne diseases such as cholera.
