An earthquake of magnitude 3.7 on the Richter scale with an epicenter three kilometers from Serreta, on the island of Terceira, was felt at 7:18 p.m. (8:18 p.m. in Lisbon), according to Civil Protection of the Azores, the sixth of this Monday. .

“The Center for Information and Seismic Surveillance of the Azores (CIVISA) reports that at 7:18 p.m. (time) on June 10, an event of magnitude 3.7 (Richter) was recorded and the epicenter was approximately 3 km away. to the ESE. [és-sudoeste] from Serreta, Terceira Island,” reads a statement available on the website of the Azores Regional Civil Protection and Fire Service (SRPCBA).

According to the information available so far, the earthquake was felt with maximum intensity VI, on the Modified Mercalli scale, in the parishes of Serreta and Doze Ribeiras, in the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo.

It was also felt with intensity V in Santa Bárbara, Cinco Ribeiras, Raminho, São Bartolomeu and São Mateus (Angra do Heroísmo), with intensity IV in the remaining parishes of Angra do Heroísmo and in Biscoitos and Quatro Ribeiras (Praia da Vitória) and with intensity III in Topo, on the island of S. Jorge.

As part of the seismovolcanic crisis that has affected the island of Terceira since June 2022, this event was the most intense recorded today by CIVISA on that island.

In total, CIVISA today recorded 13 earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 1.5 on the Richter scale, on the island of Terceira, of which six were felt by the population, two of magnitude 1.7, one of 2.6, one of 2.9, one of 3.0 and the most recent of 3.7.

According to the Richter scale, earthquakes are classified according to their magnitude as micro (less than 2.0), very small (2.0-2.9), small (3.0-3.9), mild (4, 0-4.9), moderate (5.0-5.9), strong (6.0-6.9), large (7.0-7.9), important (8.0-8.9) , exceptional (9.0-9.9) and extreme (when it is greater than 10).

The Modified Mercalli scale measures “degrees of intensity and respective description.”
