Hurricane Beryl has reached the category of “extremely dangerous.” Approaching the Caribbean islands

Hurricane Beryl, the first Atlantic hurricane of 2024, has been upgraded to Category 4, being considered “extremely dangerous”. It is approaching the Barlavento archipelago, a group of islands in the southeastern part of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean.

On June 28, it formed as a tropical storm in the Atlantic Ocean and on Saturday it was considered a hurricane and became a Category 4 hurricane. Winds reach more than 200 kilometers per hour.

According to the NHC (National Hurricane Center), it thus becomes a hurricane whose winds and storms, expected for Monday, endanger life.

Barbados, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada are under a hurricane warning, while Martinique, Tobago and Dominica are under a tropical storm warning, the NHC said in its latest statement.

The Atlantic hurricane season, which began on June 1, has so far seen the formation of two tropical storms, Alberto and Beryl, the latter becoming the first hurricane of the season.

This year, the Atlantic will have an above-average hurricane season, with the possibility of up to thirteen hurricanes, of which up to seven could be large, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). .

Forecasts point to the formation of a total of 17 to 25 storms this year, that is, with maximum sustained winds exceeding 62 kilometers per hour.
