The group that owns TVI and CNN is preparing a new generalist channel, which will replace TVI Ficção on cable television. The newspaper Eco reported that the license application has already been submitted to the Social Communication Regulatory Body, information that was confirmed to Público on Tuesday by CNN director Nuno Santos.
Media Capital Plans launch the group’s new channel later this year, in a space that shares entertainment and informationwhich will compete with the audiences of CMTV, the leading channel in this general segment.
The direction will be in charge of Hugo Andradethe director of CNN also confirmed. After having been director of programs at RTP1 and RTP Memória, Hugo Andrade currently holds, and since 2020, the position of deputy general director of TVI.
This will be the second channel launched by Media Capital in three years. In November 2021, CNN Portugal took the place in the news channel previously occupied by TVI24. Now, the new launch will be the result of a reformulation of the already existing TVI Ficção.
At the end of June, TVI Ficção was the ninth most watched cable channel, with an identical share (1.3%) to SIC Mulher, from the Impresa group. With the transition of TVI Ficção to the general segment, Media Capital now owns one generalist free-to-air channel, TVI, and three cable channels: CNN, news, TVI Reality, entertainment, and the new channel, also generalist.
