Thirteen districts under orange alert due to heat

Thirteen districts in mainland Portugal remain under orange alert on Wednesday due to the heat, on a day when there are more than 40 municipalities at maximum risk of rural fires, according to the IPMA.

the districts of Bragança, Viseu, Évora, Guarda, Faro, Vila Real, Setúbal, Santarém, Lisbon, Beja, Castelo Branco, Portalegre and Braga are under orange warning until 6:00 p.m. this Wednesday, before turning yellow until 6 pm on Thursday.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) also placed the districts of Porto, Viana do Castelo, Leiria, Aveiro and Coimbra under yellow notice until 6 p.m. on Wednesday due to persistently high maximum temperatures.

The highest maximum temperature expected for this Wednesday will be reached in Beja with 42 degrees, followed by Évora and Castelo Branco with 41 degrees and Portalegre and Santarém with 40 degrees.

The Vila Real district will have a maximum temperature of 39 degrees, Lisbon, Viseu, Braga and Bragança 38 and Faro 36 degrees.

The Madeira archipelago is also under yellow warning until 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday due to the heat.

The IPMA issues an orange warning whenever there is a “moderate to high risk meteorological situation” and a yellow warning when there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the meteorological situation.

Due to the heat, more than 40 municipalities in the districts of Faro, Portalegre, Santarém, Castelo Branco, Viseu, Guarda and Bragança are facing the highest risk of rural fires on Wednesday.

IPMA also placed several advices of All districts in mainland Portugal have a very high and high fire danger.

According to IPMA estimates, the risk of fire will remain high in some districts at least until Sunday.

This risk, determined by the IPMA, has five levels, ranging from low to maximum, and the calculations are obtained from the air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and the amount of precipitation in the last 24 hours.

The IPMA forecasts for this Wednesday on the continent a continued warm weather with partly cloudy or clear skies, light winds, weak to moderate from the western quadrant and a slight decrease in the maximum temperature on the coast of the northern and central regions and a slight increase in the Algarve.

Minimum temperatures will range between 17 degrees Celsius (in Setúbal) and 25 (in Portalegre) and maximum temperatures between 25 degrees (in Aveiro) and 42 (in Beja)..

For the Madeira archipelago, the IPMA expects periods of very cloudy skies, which will gradually become slightly cloudy from the beginning of the morning, weak to moderate winds from the north/northeast and a slight increase in maximum temperatures in the highlands.

In Funchal temperatures will vary between 21 and 28 degrees and in Porto Santo between 21 and 26 degrees.
