A plane bound for Pokhara crashed while attempting to take off from Kathmandu, Nepal. The disaster left 18 people dead, with the pilot being the only survivor. The cause has not yet been determined.
A domestic flight in Nepal crashed on Wednesday with 19 people on board as it took off from Kathmandu, Nepalese daily Kathmandu Post reported. Local authorities have confirmed that 18 people have died and one survivor.
“Nineteen people, including the crew, were on board the Pokhara-bound aircraft,” airport spokesman Premnath Thakur said.
Seventeen people were airline employees and two crew members, Nepalese police spokesman Dan Bahadur Karki told AFP, adding that “the pilot was rescued and is receiving medical assistance.” A doctor at Kathmandu Medical College Hospital also said the Saurya Airlines pilot had eye injuries but was not in danger of dying, Lusa news agency reported.
According to a statement from the region’s Civil Aviation Authority, “rescue efforts are continuing.” “The pilot was rescued and is being treated,” Karki added. “Eighteen bodies were recovered, including that of a foreigner. We will take them for an autopsy.”
The plane, which belongs to national carrier Saurya, crashed while taking off from the runway at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport for Pokhara at around 11 a.m. local time, CNN quoted Gyanendra Bhul, an information officer at the airport, as saying, adding that the aircraft was undergoing maintenance.
Tribhuvan International Airport remained closed as emergency crews worked.
