High temperatures put Portugal under yellow alert and more than 20 municipalities in the interior of the Centre and Algarve at maximum risk of fire

Most districts in mainland Portugal remain under yellow warning this Thursday, due to high temperatures, and the warning will be raised to orange on Friday in five of the districts.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) expanded, until the end of the day on Saturday, the orange warning in Bragança, Viseu, Guarda, Vila Real and Castelo Branco. However, this warning will not come into effect until 9:00 am on Friday.

Until then, these districts are on yellow alert, similar to those of Évora, Porto, Viana do Castelo, Beja, Portalegre and Braga.

Starting Friday, the districts of Setúbal, Santarém, Aveiro and Coimbra will also be under yellow alert.

Only the districts of Lisbon, Leiria and Faro are without warning during these days.

For this Thursday, the IPMA placed more than 20 municipalities in the districts of Guarda, Castelo Branco, Portalegre and Faro in maximum risk of fire.

IPMA placed in Very high risk in most municipalities in the north and center of the country.which covers districts such as Bragança, Vila Real, Viseu, Braga, Porto, Coimbra, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Santarém and Leiria, as well as the municipality of Almodôvar, in the district of Beja, and five other municipalities in the district of Faro.

In High risk is a big part of Alentejo. and around 60 municipalities in the districts of Lisbon, Leiria, Santarém, Coimbra, Aveiro, Viseu, Porto, Braga, Vila Real and Viana do Castelo.

The risk of fire will increase in the coming days, accompanied by the forecast of rising temperatures.

The risk of fire, determined by the IPMA, has five levels, ranging from low to maximum, and the calculations are obtained from the air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and the amount of precipitation in the last 24 hours.

A slight increase in maximum temperatures is expected in the northern and central interior on Thursday.

Minimum temperatures will range between 15ºC (Coimbra) and 22ºC (Faro) and maximum temperatures between 24º (Aveiro, Sines and Sagres) and 37ºC (Castelo Branco and Bragança).
