The European Union Electoral Observation Mission (EU EOM) to Mozambique’s general elections on October 9 said this Tuesday that it found “irregularities during the recount and unjustified changes” in the electoral results that must be clarified.

The European Union Electoral Observation Mission began its activities in Mozambique on September 1, 2024 and deployed 179 observers for election dayhaving issued a preliminary statement on October 11, about the electoral process.
“The EU EOM continued to observe the electoral process, although EU observers have been prevented from observing tabulation processes in some districts and provinces, as well as at national level.“, it reads.
The statement adds that “as a measure to contribute to the trust and integrity of the electoral process,” the MOE The EU “reiterates its call to electoral bodies to carry out the tabulation process in a transparent and credible mannerensuring the verification of the results of the polling stations.”

The position comes after Mozambique experienced moments of tension this Monday, with clashes between protesters and police, especially in Maputo, after the launch of tear gas and shots into the air, to demobilize a peaceful march called by the presidential candidate against the double murder of two supporters and the challenge of the electoral results in the intermediate count.
“Taking into account the social tensions and electoral violence recorded in recent days, the EU EOM reiterates its condemnation of the murders of Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe [advogado de Venâncio Mondlane e mandatário do Partido Podemos, que o apoia, respetivamente]and calls for maximum moderation for all and respect for fundamental freedoms and political rights“adds the statement.

The EU EOM also states “that it is the responsibility of the electoral administration to clarify irregularities and of the Constitutional Council to resolve them during the process of validating the results, respecting the will of the voters.”
“The EU EOM will remain in Mozambique to monitor the next phases of the electoral process. Subsequently, it will publish a final report, including its assessment and recommendations to improve the electoral framework,” the statement concludes.
