More than 560 people died in Angola during the last rainy season

Angola recorded a total of 567 deaths in the 2023/2024 rainy season, 175 more than in the previous period, figures that worry Angolan authorities, the national commander of the Civil Protection and Fire Service said on Thursday.

Manuel Lutango spoke to the press at the end of the regular meeting of the National Civil Protection Commission, led by its coordinator, the Minister of State and head of the Military Household of the President of the Republic, who took stock of the 2023/2024 rainy season and analyzed the Action Plan for the new rainy season that will begin on August 15.

According to Manuel Lutango, “the data was atypical” as a high number of deaths were recorded, which “is worrying when compared to the previous period.”

The official said the commission had begun considering actions for the current rainy season, noting that the previous one was quite intense.

Stating that, in the previous era, “Since August it started to rain quite heavily”which did not happen in this rainy season, Lutango said it was “it is necessary to activate all mechanisms” ensure the safety of populations, their property and the environment.

To date, Manuel Lutango continued, a total of 50,850 families, totalling 228,825 people, have been identified as being at risk.

“An action plan for the current rainy season was analyzed. This action plan is made up of multi-sector actions, ranging from raising awareness among some people in risk areas, a continuous process, through to rescue and salvage, response to care and resettlement of people in risk areas, support with medicines, a series of planned activities,” he said.

The rainy season in Angola begins on August 15 and ends on May 15.
