More than 235,000 people displaced by floods caused by Typhoon Yagi in Myanmar

Floods caused by Typhoon Yagi in Myanmar have forced more than 235,000 people to flee their homes, the country’s ruling military junta announced on Friday.

In total, “236,649 people (…) were displaced due to flooding caused by the typhoon. There were 33 dead and one injured in the country” said junta spokesman Zaw Min Tun, revising downwards the authorities’ previous report, which had indicated at least 36 fatalities.

The Rangoon government spokesman added that communications with some areas have been cut off, so the situation in which they are is unknown.

Northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar were hit by flooding and landslides after Yagi brought a deluge of rain when it hit the region last weekend.

In Myanmar, this situation has further aggravated the misery in the country mired in a humanitarian, security and political crisis since the February 2021 coup against the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi.

Authorities are also investigating unconfirmed reports that dozens of migrant workers are missing following landslides in a gold mining area in central Mandalay, the junta spokesman said.
