Researcher creates process that allows prolonged use of cork in automobiles

A researcher from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) developed “an innovative process” that stabilizes the natural characteristics of cork and allows its prolonged use in the interior of cars, it was revealed this Wednesday.

“Due to the existence of a strong interest in the market for the use of sustainable materials, Cork plays a prominent role due to its various characteristics, but until now it could not be used in the automotive sector.since it is a material that discolors quickly under the action of sunlight,” highlights FEUP.

In a statement, the faculty clarifies that the process created by researcher Rita Almeida stabilizes the natural characteristics of cork, ensuring that it does not lose its color and improves its performance in terms of protection against ultraviolet radiation and thermal aging.

“This technology provides sun protection to the cork through its pigmentation with hematite nanoparticles”states the FEUP, adding that the solution has already been patented.

The master’s thesis was carried out in a business environment at TMG Automotive, in Famalicão, and the research resulted in “an exchange and exploitation agreement for the patenting of the developed solution.”

“Technology and quality must go hand in hand, which is why there is enormous interest in improving and adapting the quality of their products, investing heavily in research and development of new materials and techniques,” says Rita Almeida, quoted in the statement. , referring to the company.

The master’s thesis was directed by Adélio Mendes, professor of Chemical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto.
