European company builds three Earth observation satellites in Portugal

Open Cosmos will build three satellites for Earth observation in Portugal and their launch is scheduled for 2026, announced this Thursday the European company that has a subsidiary in the country.

The satellites will join a satellite constellation operated by Open Cosmos, which has facilities in the United Kingdom, Spain, Greece and Porto.

In a statement, the company states that “it will undertake high-resolution Earth observation activities within the scope of the Portuguese space agenda, integrated into the PRR [Plano de Recuperação e Resiliência]”.

The Portuguese satellites will make it possible to follow the Atlantic Ocean, land cover, biodiversity and the effects of natural disasters or climate change.

In 2025, the company hopes to have new facilities in Coimbra, which will allow Portugal to respond to “the needs of the African, European and Latin American markets” in access to satellite data.
