Greenhouse gas emissions fall by 8.3% in the EU in 2023

Greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union (EU) decreased by 8.3% in 2023 compared to the previous year, according to a report from the European Commission published this Thursday.

According to the community executive, this is the “largest annual drop in recent decades, with the exception of 2020, the year in which the pandemic caused a 9.8% drop in emissions.”

Net greenhouse gas emissions are 37% less than 1990 emissions.

The European Commission announced that during this period the EU’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased by 68%, leading the community executive to conclude that it is possible to “decouple emissions from economic growth.”

Quoted in the statement, the executive commissioner responsible for Climate Action, Wopke Hoekstra, who is at the end of his mandate, considered that the The EU is today “responsible for 6% of global emissions” and wants to show everyone “international partners” that it is possible to grow economically and act to combat climate change.

“Our work must continue, both internally and [da UE] As externally, the consequences of climate change on our citizens are evident,” added the commissioner.
