Water is a tourism potential that Mondim de Basto wants to develop and, to this end, it will invest 3.4 million euros in the execution of two projects to enhance the banks of the Tâmega, Cabril and Cabrão rivers.

This Wednesday, a decree was published in the Official Gazette, signed by the Undersecretary of State and Budget, which authorizes the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) to assume multi-year commitments and carry out the respective division of burdens related to the implementation of the Plan. valorization of the banks of the Tâmega River and the Cabril River.
The value of this intervention amounts to 2.9 million euros and, in August, an investment of around half a million euros was announced in the enhancement of the Cabrão River waterfalls, also in that municipality of the Vila Real district. . The two projects will be financed by the Environmental Fund.
“This is the largest investment in the rehabilitation of the banks of our rivers, and we are talking about the Tâmega and Cabril rivers, but also the Cabrão, which will allow better conditions to visit these spaces and at the same time will create conditions for the inhabitants of Mondinense and those who visitors can enjoy these spaces safely,” highlighted the mayor.
In the project that covers the Tâmega and Cabril rivers, a pedestrian path will be created that will connect the two rivers, with the creation of two leisure areas in each, which will include sports equipment and a grab bar. In the Tâmega there will also be conditions for canoeing and rafting.
According to the ordinance, the Tâmega River “constitutes a differentiating asset for the municipality of Mondim de Basto, both in natural and heritage, cultural, landscape and socioeconomic terms.”

The project announced for the Cabrão River aims to requalify the area, create walking trails and promote local biodiversity. It also includes the creation of walkways, installation of interpretive signage and the creation of rest areas.
The waterfall is located in the Alvão Natural Park (PNA), in the parish of Bilhó and flows down the Cabrão River forming several lagoons, and there are also old water mills there. This river flows into Cabril, which is a tributary of the Tâmega.
