The approach, through the image, to relevant social and environmental issues on the planet will bring renowned international videographers and photographers to Aveiro, in the seventh edition of the Exodus festival, between November 29 and December 1.
With work focused on the climate crisis and globalization, already awarded by World Press Photo (2021), Slovenian photographer and director Ciril Jazbec stands out with ‘Dream to Cure Water’, a documentary that explores water scarcity in the Himalayas, the Alps and the Andes.
This international travel and adventure photography and video festival, which takes place at the Aveiro Congress Center, will also feature Marcel Mettelsiefen, documentary filmmaker and director of photography who will address the themes that led him to win four Emmy awards, three BAFTAs and be nominated. to the Oscar in the ‘Best Documentary Short Film’ category.
The festival also highlights Indian wildlife photographer and documentary filmmaker Aishwarya Sridhar, the youngest winner of the Sanctuary Asia-Young Naturalist Award and the International Camera Fair.
“This outstanding event brings together some of the best photographers, videographers and filmmakers in the world, with the purpose of raising public awareness about social and environmental issues through images. Furthermore, the festival inspires its participants to adopt a more conscious and active stance, both individually and collectively,” Bernardo Conde, director of Exodus, highlighted to Lusa.
The artists, photographers, adventurers, travelers and advocates for social and environmental causes who traditionally complete the Exodus panel share their experiences and stories “with the goal of encouraging change and promoting greater awareness of the issues affecting our world.”
The main program also includes the Norwegian photographer Jonas Bendiksen, “recognized for the innovative way in which he explores human stories”, and the French photojournalist Eric Bouvet, five times awarded at the World Press Photo, and with an extensive work that covers conflicts and historical events.
“This is a culturally notable event and especially relevant in a period of increasing selfishness and individualism, as well as increasing conflicts transmitted in real time. Given these facts, it is essential to give voice to these stories in a human way and without sensationalism, offering a comprehensive and close perspective of local realities, lived and felt in the first person,” adds Bernardo Conde.
Also arriving from outside Portugal are the Spanish photographers Ricardo García Vilanova and Andrea Font, the Swiss Martin Bissig and the Italian David Monteleone, who are joined by the Portuguese Patricia de Melo Moreira.
“Exodus Aveiro Fest seeks to sow a deeper consciousness, believing that it is only possible to build a better society with rigorous information and genuine respect for human dignity. The festival aims to create bridges that bring us closer, reinforcing our common humanity,” says Isabel Gonçalves, producer of the event.
Exodus, which will feature a round table with the main participants, begins on Friday night with conferences, conversations and screenings of films and documentaries, also including in the program a part dedicated to Portuguese image talents and another with reports from trips, in collaboration with the ABVP. – Association of Portuguese Travel Bloggers.
