The strange sight of a red-blooded sky near Shanghai, China, caused fear among the citizens.
Photos taken by residents of Zhoushan in China’s eastern Zhejiang Province show the night sky turning orange and red amid thick clouds.
Videos on social platforms in China documented the phenomenon that took place on May 7th.
In response to speculations circulating by activists on Chinese social media, the Zhoushan Bureau of Meteorology declared that it was nothing supernatural.
“Yesterday it was completely foggy and clouds were forming at low altitude,” said a spokesman, adding that “it was a phenomenon caused by the refraction of light.”
According to state media, a local fishing company confirmed that the refraction of light came from one of the fishing boats.
“The red lights came from our fishing boats… we opened it while we were catching saury,” said the deputy director of the company.
“The red light was refracted on the surface of the water and shone in the sky, causing a mirage-like phenomenon. This is common, especially in coastal areas. ”
Some netizens pointed out that in 1770, nine days of red skies appeared in many countries, as Japanese scientists said in an academic article in 2017.
In response, an expert from the space physics research team at the University of China Geosciences in Wuhan told the media that solar and geomagnetic activity was quiet on Saturday and there were no large cases of solar activity, according to tracking records. it happens in Zhoushan.
