King Emeritus Juan Carlos I will return to Spain this Thursday, after spending more than 21 months living in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates. The monarch lives in exile after the Spanish Justice closed three investigations against him, specifically for corruption and embezzlement.
According to a statement from the Spanish Royal House to which ABC had access, the King Emeritus will be in Spain for four days – from Thursday to Monday. The first three days he will be in Galicia, more specifically in Sanxenxo, where he will stay at the house of his friend Pedro Campos, president of the local yacht club.
Only on Monday Juan Carlos will travel to Madrid, where he will hold a meeting with his son, King Felipe VI, and with the queen emeritus, Sofía.

Returning to Spain after almost two years of exile in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates) is part of the desire of the King Emeritus to “travel frequently to Spain to visit family and friends, and organize his personal life and his place of residence in the scope of a private character ”, adds the statement.
Juan Carlos has lived in Abu Dhabi since August 2020, after an economic scandal related to the alleged receipt of alleged millionaire commissions for the works of the high-speed train to Mecca (Saudi Arabia), among other causes, which have already been filed by the Spanish Court. .
Last Sunday, Felipe VI spoke by phone with his father and both agreed to meet in Madrid when the king emeritus traveled to Spain.
On May 2, the Spanish Anti-Corruption Prosecutor closed the cases it had open, one on the alleged receipt of 65 million euros in commissions for the construction of the Medina-Mecca high-speed train, another on alleged undeclared donations and a third on suspected of having hidden funds in tax havens.
