Fox News presents the story of a transgender five-year-old boy as part of a special LGBTQ+ Pride Month program on Friday.
Section America’s NewsroomFox News reporter Brian Llenas told the story of Ryland Whittington, a young woman whose family accepted her transition to a transgender man when she was five.
Whittington hopes that the publication of her story will encourage other families to accept their trans children.
“I’m here to make the journey hassle-free for others. It may be difficult for you right now, but we believe you, Whittington told Fox News. “This family may not know you or where you live, but you know, we understand you and we believe in you.”
Llenas described Whittington at the beginning of the episode as “a typical Southern California teenager.” According to her mother, Hillary Whittington, before Ryland could speak, she told her parents that she was a man.
“I see. He’s not the one trying to be a man. It hurts. It hurts to wear women’s clothes and we always told him you were a woman,” Hillary Whittington said.
Whittington’s family fully supported her decision when she announced she was transgender at the age of five.
Despite the Whittington family’s “conservative belief”, Whittington’s mother believed that “God created Ryland as he is.”
Llenas’ coverage includes Trevor Project statistics that more than half of transgender and non-binary children self-harm.
“I would rather have a living son than a dead daughter,” Hillary Whittington told Fox News. “If we step back and do what many parents do, I don’t think we’re going to have any of the kids you see here today.”
Hillary Whittington added that Ryland Whittington lives “true and true to himself”.
The Whittington family garnered national attention for the first time in 2014 after a family YouTube video went viral. After that, Whittington’s mother wrote a book. Raising Ryland in 2016.
The Llenas episode concluded by praising the Whittington family for publicly discussing transgender issues in today’s political climate. She also commended the family for their “extraordinary courage,” she said.
