The director of a funeral home in the state of Colorado, USA, admitted the crimes of selling organs to human corpses buried under the house.
Defendant Megan Hess, 45, said she gave her clients fake body ash and these confessions are expected to lead to a maximum 20-year incarceration. Other cases against Hess will be dropped under the plea agreement.
Hess and his mother, Shirley Koch, who manage the Sunset Mesa funeral home in Montrose, were arrested in 2020 and charged with 6 counts of mail fraud and 3 illegal shipments of dangerous products.
A grand jury indictment said that from 2010 to 2018, Hess and Koch offered to cremate the corpses and give the remains to families in the amount of $ 1,000 or more, but most cremations did not take place.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, on dozens of occasions Hess and Koch transferred corpses or body parts to third parties involved in human organ trafficking without the parents ’knowledge.
Officials said they sent corpses and body parts that tested positive for infectious diseases, including hepatitis B and C and HIV, even though recipients believed the remains were disease -free.
FBI agents found that Hess arranged dozens of body donor consent forms at the funeral home, and allegedly gave a family an urn of concrete dust instead of the ashes of loved ones.
Hiss raised $ 40,000 by taking and selling gold teeth to some of the dead, and allegedly sold the remains to medical research companies and colleges that use the corpses to train medical students and dental.
