MSNBC contributor Neil Katyal told “Deadline” on Friday that the FBI’s order for the Mar-a-Lago raid indicated “potential alteration or falsification of records at a functioning federal agency.” an investigation that will require “internal source, mole””.
Katyal said, “This is a big headline for me – the former president of the United States is being investigated by the FBI for, among other things, violating the Espionage Act. So it’s a headline for me. Then it was confirmed by two different things: a search warrant and a Mar. I’ll start with the last one, because you know, yesterday, when there were all these reports that the FBI was trying to find nuclear information or electronic intelligence information, I said, “Look, we have to be careful,” because that’s what the FBI is looking for. This is actually. not here. There is no reasonable argument as to why this material is in Mar-a-Lago.”
He continued: “Donald Trump is no longer president. It doesn’t need this information. So this is a deadly truth. Then we have the second document, the search warrant. That’s how the FBI went to the federal judge and said, you know, this is what we need. Then the judge signs it and says you’re allowed to do it. Now, in an arrest warrant signed by a federal peace judge, he says there must be reasonable grounds to believe that Mar-a-Lago had documents related to three specific crimes. One of them is 18 USC 793, Espionage Act, Taking or Recklessly Retrieving Information to Defend the Interests of the United States from Appropriate Storage, also known as the White House. It also includes not providing classified or confidential information as requested by the United States. That’s ten years in prison.”
Katyal added: “The second offense is 18 USC 2071, which is the concealment, deletion, or misrepresentation of protective information. It’s a three-year fine, but it also prevents you from running for future federal office. Then the third offense the magistrate signed was 18 USC 1519, which came to our surprise. It is the law to destroy, alter, or falsify records during an active federal investigation. This is probably why Trump flushed the documents down the toilet as soon as he found out that the government was looking for them. Who knows? This probably requires an internal resource that requires a mole or something working at the FBI. Otherwise, I have a hard time understanding how the FBI thinks this is a potential crime. So three.
