CNN tunes primetime series amid network turmoil and scandal

Amid network turmoil, scandal-ridden CNN has renewed its primetime series, bringing Jake Tupper, Laura Coates and Elisin Camerota to new time zones.

In the latest move from new CNN chief Chris Licht, CNN’s Washington chief correspondent Tupper will replace former Chris Cuomo, with viewers aged 25 to 54 falling 31 percent in the second quarter. Variation said Thursday.

The temporary patch also includes the relocation of Coates and Camerota, who will host the 10 p.m. show, to replace presenter Don Lemon, who moved from 6am to 9am.

After the reassignment, Lemon said, “I haven’t been replaced.”

Licht’s new corporate media figures will “showcase Jake’s compelling news, intelligent analysis, and consistent interviews as we increase the coverage of the midterms; and Alisin and Laura’s understanding, experience and strong voice will support and expand that scope,” he told network staff on Thursday.

Licht took over the network after Jeff Zucker left in February after being questioned about his relationship with longtime CNN chief Allison Gollust as part of a wider investigation into Andrew Cuomo. Gollust left the network in February following Zucker’s resignation.

Zucker is best known for transforming former President Trump from a reality TV star into a powerful presidential candidate. Zucker is the showrunner of NBC. The network’s turmoil seems to have hurt its viewership and profitability. On CNN’s prime time show, viewers ages 25 to 54 fell 31 percent in the second quarter, according to Nielsen. This demographic is most sought after by advertisers because these viewers have the highest disposable income. By contrast, MSNBC’s viewership dropped 40 percent and Fox News’ viewership dropped just 2 percent in the same category.
