Those who think that the Met Gala is a stellar event of modern times are wrong. In the distant 1990s, the New York party gathered luxurious guests and caused a lot to talk about. In 1996 Diana was the guest of honor, surprising with her Dior look and undoubtedly stealing all the attention. Now, after 26 years, the French house is going to reissue the Lady Dior bag that the Princess of Wales wore at the party. THE piece in dark blue silk and adorned with gemstones, will be available in a limited editionbut the brand does not say, for now, what is the price and the number of copies.

Diana’s first Lady Dior bag was a gift to her. The Princess of Wales was visiting Paris in September 1995 for the opening of a Paul Cézanne retrospective exhibition at the Grand Palais, and the French first lady of the time, Bernadette Chirac, offered her the Dior bag. The bag had been created that same year and was called Chouchou, but with Diana as a star client, the name would change to Lady Dior, says Vogue.

Diana must have liked the model and, not only did she wear the bag in black with gold accessories on several occasions, but for the 1996 Met Gala she wore a Lady Dior in a smaller version and in dark blue silk adorned with shiny accessories. That year, the Princess of Gala was the guest of honor at the party that precedes the great annual fashion exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, which that year was dedicated to Christian Dior.

The Princess of Wales wore a long dark blue silk lace gown, specially designed by John Galliano, the British designer who was Dior’s fashion head at the time. The other accessory that shone that night was the necklace with sapphires and rows of pearls that Diana liked so much.

The Lady Dior bag is partly made in Italy, but it is a reflection of the heritage of the house of Dior, according to the brand. The leather, which gives shape to the piece, is sewn to create a “cannage” effect, the special pattern created in straw in the Napoleon III chairs that have been part of the brand’s history for several years. On the handle hang “charms” with the letters of the word Dior.

Over the years, this model has become a true range with options for sizes, colors and textures. It has even been the canvas for projects with plastic artists. Recently, the designer in charge of the brand’s creative destinations, Maria Grazia Chiuri, redesigned the bag in two new formats, Lady D-Lite and Lady D-Joy.
