Michael Roth, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the German Parliament, called for Finland and Sweden to grant security guarantees to Germany and other NATO members for the period before their accession to NATO.
Speaking to the newspaper “Welt am Sonntag” this Saturday, on the eve of the informal meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Berlin, (NATO) Finland and Sweden should know that they can count on Germany’s support.
At the same time, he added, the accession should take place through the fastest possible outcome process and voluntary security guarantees to these two countries by as many NATO partners as possible. In this regard, he noted that the UK has promised Sweden and Finland a comprehensive security guarantee against the background of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine.
At the same time, Root expressed hope that NATO foreign ministers would follow in Britain’s footsteps. “If the Finnish government wants, NATO partners should also discuss the possibility of sending allied forces to strengthen the next eastern front,” he said. He pointed out that Germany, one of the largest countries in NATO, is also responsible for this matter.
