BELGRADE, Serbia (AP)-Belgrade was hit by a series of bomb threats on Monday in the Serbian capital, including threats to schools, bridges, restaurants and a football game, which stopped traffic during rush hour.
Police reported that after several searches, no explosives were found. It was not immediately clear who was behind the alleged email threats.
Nearly 100 elementary schools, including McDonald’s and various restaurants, including shopping malls, bridges, zoos, airports, train stations and water companies, were evacuated following the threats.
A football match in the Premier League was postponed after police raided the stadium.
The police closed the traffic on the bridges during rush hour, causing major traffic jams.
“Even if the threats seem unrealistic, we should not ignore them,” said Serbian government minister Branko Ruzic.
Authorities have not disclosed who is behind the threats, which have increased in intensity over the past few days.
Serbian press papers said all threats “come from abroad as a sign of harassment” after Serbia refused to impose sanctions on Russia for its aggression in Ukraine. Reports cannot be independently verified.
National airline Air Serbia has faced multiple bomb threats in recent months after it became the only company in Europe other than Turkish airlines to maintain scheduled flights to Russia, despite the West’s flight embargo.
“Serbia is the target of a special war waged from various addresses in Europe,” said Alexander Vulin, Serbia’s pro-Russian Interior Minister.
