Protests continue in Armenia demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan

On Wednesday morning, Armenian police began arresting opposition demonstrators who blocked the streets of Yerevan as part of declared “civil disobedience” actions aimed at the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

The media reported that demonstrators cut off traffic in various parts of the Yerevan capital.

Police stopped the protesters by clearing the lanes of trash cans placed by the protesters to stimulate traffic.

The police press service told Interfax that 73 people had been arrested. Among those arrested were former head of the Ministry of Education, former deputy chairman of the ruling Republican Party, Armen Ashhutyan, former parliament speaker Samil Nikoyan and former deputy speaker of parliament Eduard Sharmazanov.

Armenian police also arrested more than 400 opposition demonstrators on Tuesday morning.

It is noteworthy that opposition parties have held rallies since mid-April to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan due to the conflict with Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Opposition parties have accused Pashinyan of planning to hand over to Baku the Armenian-controlled areas of Nagorno-Karabakh.
