Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said his country’s authorities were trying to file additional lawsuits against U.S. arms manufacturers.
Ebrard added in a press conference Wednesday night: “We have filed a legal complaint today and we are currently preparing another case.”
According to rough estimates, between 2010 and 2020, between 2.5 million and 3 million guns were illegally smuggled into Mexico and spread to criminals there, according to the newspaper Milenio. The available information confirms that about 70% of this weapon originated in the United States.
In August 2021, the Mexican government filed a lawsuit in a district court in Boston (Massachusetts) against U.S. arms manufacturers and suppliers. Mexican authorities expect to receive up to $ 10 billion in compensation.
It is noteworthy that organized crime gangs have been largely responsible for the widespread violence experienced in Mexico over the years.
In 2021, more than 33.3 thousand planned killings were committed in the country. Most of these crimes were committed with the use of firearms.
