The Polish Prime Minister promised military assistance to Sweden and Finland during NATO’s tender in the event of an attack.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has pledged military assistance to Finland and Sweden if any country comes under attack while applying to join the NATO military alliance following a similar British move.

Prime Minister Morawiecki announced his support for Finland and Sweden on Thursday, saying: “I see Sweden and Finland joining NATO as an important support for peace in Europe. And a serious defeat for the Kremlin. ”

“I want to make it clear that in the event of an attack on Sweden and Finland in the accession process, Poland will help them,” he said. Additional.

Earlier this month, the United Kingdom signed mutual security agreements with Sweden and Finland, agreeing to help any country if it were attacked.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson commented on the deal, saying it could be “the basis for strengthening our security, defense and other relations”.

“We will strongly support Sweden’s accession if the Swedes decide this. We will definitely try to make sure everything is smooth and easy,” said Johnson. According to the BBC, the agreements are statements of political support, not automatic guarantees of security.

Finland and Sweden have formally applied to join the alliance after weeks of speculation as both countries changed their minds on membership after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also promised security guarantees to both countries during the application process and said that both countries would quickly gain membership in March.

But right after the two countries announced that they were applying for NATO membership, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that he and his country would not support the expansion of the alliance.

This issue is a serious obstacle for Sweden and Finland because all NATO members have to accept the entry of new members into the alliance.
