EU and UK scientists collaborate with Chinese military on thousands of next-generation projects: report

According to the investigation, universities and scientists from Britain and the European Union collaborated on thousands of joint projects with Chinese Communist military-linked institutions.

A joint search by 11 European newsrooms, the Dutch research agency

The main problem with cooperation between European researchers and those associated with the Chinese military is that it is not always clear whether the research has military applications.

This can often be “gray and vague,” says Alex Joske, an analyst at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute: “One year you’re working with artificial intelligence and algorithms to coordinate groups of objects, and the next year the same research could be applied, like teams of military drones.”

In some cases, however, the military’s use of so-called civilian research has become clearer: one scientist told researchers that “you have to make a real effort not to see a dual use here – right? It was used to monitor Uyghurs” – a Muslim minority group in the western state of Xinjiang that has suffered widespread incarceration, torture, organ harvesting and widespread surveillance in concentration camps.

In the problem, it allows academics and scientists in Germany to determine whether they believe their research has military applications and therefore can circumvent many local and European regulations for dealing with foreign countries.

“In every pair of articles published, you can also see a genuine Chinese military officer working and studying at a university in Europe and developing the relationships that led to this collaboration and research,” Yoske said.

The investigation argued that because many Chinese students were fully funded by the communist state, they were attractive to European study groups, which they often described as “money shortages”.

The issue of technology transfer between Chinese universities and the military has already become a concern in the UK, with security services reportedly investigating several top universities and hundreds of scientists for the possibility of illegally supplying top secret weapons to the Chinese state. technology.

An investigation into possible abuses at British universities reportedly found a “correlation” between these schools, which rely heavily on Chinese students to study, and the amount of technology transferred to Beijing.
