The soccer teams of Kenya and Zimbabwe will not compete in the African Cup of Nations (CAN) 2023, due to the suspensions imposed on the federations of the two countries, announced the body that manages African soccer.
In a statement released on Monday night, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) explained that The federations of Kenya and Zimbabwe “have not yet met the criteria required by FIFA to lift their suspensions”therefore, the selections of both countries will be excluded from the competition.
According to CAF, the two qualifying groups in which Kenya and Zimbabwe were included “will have only three teams and will maintain the already defined calendar”, which will begin on June 1.
On February 24, FIFA announced the suspension “with immediate effect” of the Kenyan and Zimbabwean associations, due to “the undue influence of third parties.”
At the time, Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, mentioned “government interference in the activities of the football federation.”
