Newspaper: The United States and its allies can provide safe navigation in the Black Sea

The Wall Street Journal wrote that the United States and its allies would guarantee the safe passage of Ukrainian vessels into the Black Sea as part of a humanitarian mission to avert the threat of global hunger.

The newspaper noted on Tuesday that reaching an agreement within the framework of a proposed United Nations agreement to return Russian potash fertilizers and grains from Ukraine to world markets would be the best solution. At the same time, he expressed doubts about the possibility of reaching such an agreement, blaming Russia in advance.

In the newspaper’s view, it was therefore possible for the United States to form a voluntary alliance, not directly linked to NATO, that would send ships to ensure freedom of navigation.

However, the newspaper stressed that such an operation must receive approval from Turkey, which fulfills its obligations under the Montreux Convention and closes the Bosphorus and Dardanelles Straits to warships of all countries, and stressed that talks with Ankara on this issue should start from now on. topical.

He expressed his belief that this naval mission would not carry the same risks as the previously proposed no-fly zone, as the ships of the coalition members would only work to ensure the passage of ships in international waters. without hindering the movement of Russian ships. with them. And I commented: “If Russia does not intervene, there is no need for military action.”

Russia’s Ministry of Defense has repeatedly stated that Russia’s armed forces are daily opening a humanitarian sea corridor in the southwestern direction of Ukrainian waters. At the same time, the Ukrainian authorities continue to restrict cooperation with representatives of foreign countries and shipowner companies in resolving the problem of ensuring the safe release of besieged ships to the meeting place. There is also the risk of damage to shipping and port infrastructure from the drifting of Ukrainian mines removed from the mooring area on the coasts of Black Sea countries.
