Dozens of Israeli settlers stormed the courtyard of the Al-Aqsa Mosque through the western gate on Sunday amid intense tensions in Jerusalem over a flag march in the city this afternoon.
Jewish nationalists stage a flag-waving march in the Old City of Jerusalem on Sunday, which could lead to renewed violence between Israelis and Palestinians.
The annual Jerusalem parade is reminiscent of the Israeli occupation of the Old City in the 1967 Middle East war and draws thousands of participants through its narrow, rocky streets.
For the Palestinians, the march represents a clear provocation and a violation of one of the few places in the city that still retains a strong Arab character.
Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has so far refused to accept any changes to the flag march, despite calls from some of his coalition allies to reconsider.
“The flag march will be organized according to the planned route, as it has been for decades,” Bennett’s office said Friday.
