The Minister of Justice of the Donetsk People’s Republic Yuri Serovatko said that about 2.3 thousand prisoners of war from the factory “Azovestal” in the city of Mariupol are located in the territory of the republic.
“All POWs are in the territory of the Donetsk People’s Republic… Specifically, we have approximately 2,300 Azovstal POWs,” Serovatko said in a televised statement. He said they were treated like ordinary prisoners of war and investigators contacted them.
It is noteworthy that the city of Mariupol, with a population of approximately 450,000, was in June of the same year, although it was the second largest city of the republic after Donetsk, when the Donetsk People’s Republic was declared in 2014., Ukraine’s security forces are in control.
On May 20, 2022, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the liberation of all Mariupol lands, including the Mariupol steel plant “Azovstal”, including underground facilities where soldiers hide and Ukrainian fighters of the Azov extremist regiment.
